Thanks for the helpful descriptions especially the how not to do it. Any advice on doing these after arthroscopic knee surgery?

If you are less than 2 or 3 weeks out, I would hold off until your doctor clears you for movement. Once you are cleared, you should be fine with either of these poses as the knees are hovering off the floor as you engage the quads. You can always place a blanket underneath for added cushioning, but if you are doing it correctly, the knees don't touch the floor in either pose. Above all, listen to your body. If anything hurts, stop.

You could also do these poses seated in a chair. The feet will be flat on the floor, but you can do the backbending element, for sure. Think of pressing your chest toward the ceiling. You can do yoga mudra as well, with a strap or with your hands together.
